“So this is it then?” Logan said suddenly, pulling Brynn from her thoughts. “We’re over?”
She tossed her long, red hair over her shoulder. “Yes,” she confirmed. “We’re over.”
“And you don’t want to even try to make it work? Maybe there’s a solution to our problem. Maybe we can find a way to see each other more—”
“No. This is it,” Brynn interjected. Then, realizing how harsh she sounded, added a touch more gently, “I’m sorry, Logan.”
He scrubbed a hand over his face and looked to the cloudy sky, then back at her. He nodded with resigned acceptance and dropped into a bow as he said quietly, “Goodbye, Princess Brynn.” With that, he turned on his heel and marched back to the castle.
Brynn let out a breath and kicked at the grass beneath her feet as she gave Logan a head start. It was late afternoon and the chill was steadily increasing, though she hardly felt it. She was used to the cold of Gaellen, especially since she spent a lot of her time on the road enduring all weather conditions. The air was filled with the sweet scent of apples as the cool wind whipped around her and the trees rustled in the breeze.
Crunch!
She whirled around at the sound and found Kieran standing behind her, munching on a large, red apple as he leaned against the trunk of a tree. He was dressed in black trousers and a black jerkin over a white long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and the laces near the collar tied loosely. Evidently, the cold didn’t seem to bother him either.
“Wow, that was difficult to watch,” he drawled.
“What are you doing here?” she snapped with a bite to her tone.
He eyed her with a smirk and held up the fruit. “I fancied an apple, Your Highness.” He turned it in his hand as he eyed the fruit. “I do love these red ones. They’re quite tart but follow with the perfect sweetness and they are lovely to look at, don’t you think?”
His eyes shot back to hers, and by the way he was looking at her, she got the sense that there was more to his words though she couldn’t catch the meaning.
He took another bite of the apple, and she crossed her arms as she critically studied the man before her. He was very tall; a full head taller or more than she and truly cut a striking figure. He had broad shoulders over a tapered waist and cropped black hair cut to the same length as the shadow of stubble that framed his mouth and dusted his cheeks. His nose was wide and his jaw was firm and square. His dark skin was a shade lighter than his cousin’s ebony complexion; his was more of a deep brown, chocolaty in hue and so unlike the creamy color of her Gaellen people.
“Hasn’t anyone ever told you that it’s rude to eavesdrop,” she rebuked.
